Stories and facts
The manager of gospel musician Yaw Sarpong has confirmed that the artist is currently grappling with a stroke. In an exclusive statement, Nana Poku Ashis revealed that the renowned "Oko yi" hitmaker has been unwell for more than a year, with his health deteriorating around the same time last year. Ashis expressed optimism about Sarpong's recovery in the upcoming months, despite the challenging journey thus far.
Addressing the difficulties faced by veteran musicians and the apparent shortcomings of the Ghanaian music royalty system, Ashis emphasized the need for policy implementations by the government. He raised concerns about musicians resorting to pleading for healthcare and highlighted the neglect of royalties in the industry.
"If we have musicians coming out to beg for healthcare, then it's serious. It's time for the government to implement policies. Nobody talks about royalties, and now musicians die suffering. The pension for entertainers is their royalties. Musicians in foreign countries don't beg for help; they rely on royalties. Here, you pay these musicians 50 cedis after so many years of hard work. It's really bad," he lamented.
Ashis conveyed that Yaw Sarpong is open to any form of support, acknowledging the collective effort needed in such challenging times. "Everyone needs help. We would need prayers, and those who have and are willing to help can offer him a little. The few people he has impacted with his music should also help," he urged.
The distressing news about Yaw Sarpong's health was further echoed by gospel singers Diana Asamoah and Maame Tiwa. Diana Asamoah, on her show on Angel FM, disclosed that Yaw Sarpong is facing a mild stroke. Similarly, Maame Tiwa's emotional video circulated, where she pleaded with God for Yaw Sarpong's healing. The collective concern from those within the music industry highlights the urgent need for support and reforms to address the challenges faced by veteran musicians.
