Stories and facts

The Ghana Registered Nurses' and Midwives' Association (GRNMA), formerly known as the Ghana Registered Nurses’ Association (GRNA), stands as the foremost professional body representing registered nurses and midwives in Ghana.

The association has a rich history of dedication to advancing the standards of nursing and midwifery in the country. The GRNMA was established in March 1960 through the merger of two key organizations: the Qualified Nurses Association, led by Mr. Mettle-Nunoo, and the State Registered Nurses Association, led by Dr. Docial Kisseih.

This unification was a significant milestone, marking the beginning of a concerted effort to advocate for the professional interests of nurses and midwives, improve their working conditions, and enhance the quality of healthcare services in Ghana.

In 2007, the Ghana Nurse and Midwife Trainees Association was officially registered, further expanding the scope and influence of the GRNMA. This inclusion underscores the association's commitment to supporting the development of nursing and midwifery professionals from their training years through to their careers.

The GRNMA plays a pivotal role in the healthcare sector by advocating for the rights and welfare of its members, ensuring they receive fair remuneration, adequate working conditions, and opportunities for professional growth. The association organizes continuous education programs, workshops, and conferences to keep its members updated with the latest advancements in nursing and midwifery practices.

Furthermore, the GRNMA actively engages with government bodies and other stakeholders to influence healthcare policies that affect nurses and midwives, aiming to improve healthcare delivery across the nation. GRNMA members often participate in community health initiatives, contributing their expertise to enhance public health awareness and interventions.

As a professional body, the GRNMA remains steadfast in its mission to uphold the highest standards of nursing and midwifery practice in Ghana. Through its efforts, the association not only elevates the status of its members but also significantly contributes to the overall improvement of healthcare services in the country.
