The Agumatsa Waterfalls Festival, also known as the Wli Waterfalls Festival, is an annual celebration held in the Wli Traditional Area of Ghana’s Volta Region.
It is dedicated to the Agumatsa Falls, the highest waterfall in West Africa, which plays a vital role in the lives of the people.
The event is both cultural and spiritual, offering thanksgiving to the gods for the life-sustaining waters that serve the community’s domestic needs.
The festival is usually celebrated on the last Saturday of October or in early November. During this period, the Wli community comes alive with vibrant displays of Ewe culture.
A durbar of chiefs is held, bringing together traditional leaders and their people in colorful regalia. This durbar features cultural performances such as drumming and dancing, which reflect the traditions and heritage of the community.
Beyond its cultural significance, the Agumatsa Waterfalls Festival is also a major tourist attraction. Visitors not only participate in the festivities but also explore the natural beauty of the falls and its surroundings.
The event takes place within the Agumatsa Wildlife Sanctuary, a haven for fruit bats, birds, and other species that add to the uniqueness of the experience.
The festival serves multiple purposes. It is a time of thanksgiving to the gods for the blessing of water, a celebration of the cultural wealth of the Ewe people, and an opportunity to showcase the scenic beauty of the Wli area to the world.
Through this annual gathering, the people reaffirm their connection to nature, their traditions, and their community while inviting visitors to share in the beauty of one of Ghana’s most iconic natural sites.
Here is a collection of festivals celebrated across Ghana.
