Hans Kwofie: From Ghana Premier League champion to tragic early passing

Stories and facts

Hans Kwofie was a Ghanaian professional footballer who tragically passed away on June 21, 2024, in a car accident at the age of 35.

Born on June 10, 1989, in Tarkwa, Ghana, Kwofie was best known for his time as a forward for Birgunj United FC in the Nepal Super League and for being the top goal scorer of the 2017 Ghanaian Premier League.

Kwofie began his career in 2003 with Nsoatre Manchester United FC in Ghana’s Division Two League. His early years were spent moving between clubs, including a stint with King Solomon FC in 2005 and Tuba Metro Stars FC in 2006.

His big break came in 2007 when he joined Heart of Lions FC, one of the most renowned clubs in Ghana’s Premier League, where he signed a two-year contract.

In 2009, he returned to his hometown of Tarkwa, where he signed a long-term contract with Medeama SC, helping the club secure fourth place in the 2010–11 Ghanaian Premier League. Kwofie’s stellar performances earned him the club's top scorer title for that season.

In 2015, after several seasons with Medeama SC, Kwofie moved to the Middle East, signing a one-year contract with Al-Oruba SC in Oman’s Professional League.

He made an immediate impact, scoring his first goal in a 3-1 win over Al-Nasr S.C. He later returned to Ghana in 2016, where he briefly played for Bechem United before signing with Ashanti Gold in 2017.

That year, Kwofie emerged as the top scorer of the Ghana Premier League, with 17 goals, including a memorable hat trick against Great Olympics. His performances garnered attention from top clubs in Ghana, but he continued to perform for Ashanti Gold.

Kwofie’s international career saw him selected for the Ghana national team for the first time in 2015, making appearances in the COSAFA Cup. His debut came in a 2–1 loss to Madagascar, and he also played in a 3–0 loss to Zambia during the tournament.

In January 2018, after his successful spell with Ashanti Gold, Kwofie moved to Egypt, signing with Smouha SC. However, after a string of unimpressive performances, he mutually terminated his contract with the club.

He then joined Tanzanian side Singida United, where an unfortunate incident in 2018 saw his club report him as kidnapped, which he later debunked. Kwofie’s next move was to Malaysia, where he joined Puchong Fuerza in 2019, scoring 13 goals in all competitions during his season with the club.

He returned to Ashanti Gold in 2020 before joining Legon Cities in 2021, where he scored on his league debut and was named man of the match in a 1–1 draw against Bechem United.

Kwofie was known for his strength, agility, and technical abilities. His confidence on the ball, great vision, and passing game made him an asset both as a forward and in midfield.

Despite his international success and illustrious career across various leagues, Kwofie’s life was tragically cut short in a car accident in Dadwen, leaving behind a legacy of excellence in Ghanaian football.
