Stories and facts
Kwesi Nyantakyi, born on October 27, 1968, in Wa, Ghana, is a Ghanaian banker, lawyer, and former football administrator.
He served as the president of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) from December 30, 2005, until June 7, 2018.
During his tenure, Nyantakyi played a pivotal role in elevating Ghanaian football on the international stage. Under his leadership, the Ghana national team, the Black Stars, qualified for their first FIFA World Cup in 2006 and again in 2010 and 2014.
His contributions were recognized continentally when he was appointed Vice President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), becoming the first Ghanaian to hold that position.
However, Nyantakyi's career faced a major setback in 2018 following an investigative exposé by journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas.
The documentary, titled "Number 12," revealed alleged acts of corruption, including accepting bribes and engaging in unethical conduct.
In response, FIFA imposed a provisional 90-day suspension, which was later extended to a lifetime ban from all football-related activities.
In addition to the FIFA sanctions, Nyantakyi faced legal challenges in Ghana. He was charged with fraud and corruption, and these charges led to ongoing court proceedings.
Despite the controversies, Nyantakyi's earlier contributions to Ghanaian football remain a significant part of his complex legacy.
Beyond football, Nyantakyi is recognized for his professional background in banking and law. He holds degrees in law and has been involved in various business ventures in Ghana.
