Mahama Ayariga, is a Ghanaian lawyer, politician, and member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

He has served as Minister of Information, Minister of Youth and Sports, and Deputy Minister in various portfolios under the John Mahama and John Atta Mills administrations. Ayariga is the Member of Parliament for Bawku Central in Ghana’s Upper East Region, a seat he has held across multiple terms since 2004.

Educated in Ghana, Nigeria, and the United States, he holds a Master of Law (LLM) from Harvard Law School and a Bachelor of Law (LLB) from the University of Ghana. His professional career includes co-founding the Legal Resources Centre, where he promoted human rights and social justice.

In politics, Ayariga has faced both victories and setbacks, notably losing his seat in 2008 before reclaiming it in subsequent elections. As a parliamentarian, he has also served on the Appointments Committee. His election history highlights his strong electoral base in Bawku Central.

Ayariga’s career has not been without controversy, including allegations of bribery and court trials related to financial misconduct.

Despite these challenges, he continues to play a significant role in Ghanaian politics. Personally, Ayariga is a Muslim, married, and the son of Frank Abdulai Ayariga, a former MP for Bawku during the Hilla Limann administration.
