The Evolution of Music Education in Ghana: The story of the National Academy of Music

Stories and facts

The National Academy of Music is a premier Ghanaian institution dedicated to the training and development of musicians from across the country.

Operating under the University of Education, Winneba, the academy offers both undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs in music, nurturing the next generation of talented performers, composers, and educators.

Established in 1970 as a separate campus of the Specialist Training College, the academy was created to broaden the scope of music education and enhance the quality of music instruction in Ghana.

In its early years, graduates were required to pass the British Licentiate of the Royal Schools of Music diploma examinations, ensuring international standards in their training.

As part of the Government’s University Rationalization Programme in 1992, the National Academy of Music was integrated into the University College of Education, Winneba, becoming the Department of Music.
