Berj Art Gallery: Showcasing Ghana’s creative journey since 1996

Stories and facts

Founded in 1996 by visionary collector Joyce Quarshie, Berj Art Gallery has grown into one of Ghana’s most cherished cultural spaces.

Joyce’s passion for preserving Ghanaian and African creativity shaped the gallery into more than a venue. It became a home where art tells stories of heritage, resilience, and identity.

Her legacy lives on through the Joyce Quarshie Permanent Collection, which features pre-colonial artifacts alongside modern and contemporary works.

Even after her passing in 2024, her vision continues to inspire, with Berj hosting exhibitions that celebrate both legendary and emerging artists.

Located in Labone, Accra, the gallery is praised for its welcoming atmosphere and dynamic shows.

Recent highlights include Betty Acquah’s “It Began with a Doodle,” which portrayed everyday Ghanaian women with grace and strength, and the Création Africa Ghana Launch Exhibition, which brought together celebrated artists and drew recognition from national leaders.

In 2024, Berj expanded its reach through the Busua Artist Residency, connecting local and international artists in a creative exchange between Accra and the coastal village of Busua.

Today, Berj Art Gallery continues to nurture talent, preserve heritage, and invite the world into Ghana’s artistic story.

To visit Berj is to step into a space where past and present meet, and where art is celebrated as a living heartbeat of culture.
