The evolution of the Ghana Music Awards since 1999

Stories and facts

The Ghana Music Awards, now known as Telcel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) following a sponsorship transition from Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA), remain a pivotal annual event within Ghana's vibrant music industry. Established in 1999 by Charter House, a local event-organizing company, its core objective has been to honor and celebrate the remarkable contributions of Ghanaian musicians towards the enrichment and advancement of the nation's musical landscape.

This prestigious awards ceremony provides a platform to recognize the talents and accomplishments of artists who have significantly influenced and expanded the local music scene. Typically held between April and June, the event is broadcast nationally on GHOne TV, GTV, and/or TV3, while reaching international audiences through platforms like Akwaaba Magic on DStv and GOtv.

Amidst the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 edition faced postponement and eventual cancellation of its nominees jam in compliance with national directives on public gatherings. However, the resilience of the music community prevailed, leading to the successful hosting of the 23rd edition of VGMA in May 2022. Notably, the electrifying atmosphere of the event saw Ghanaian Hip-Hop/Rap artiste Black Sherif clinching the prestigious Artiste of the Year award, marking a night of jubilation and emotional performances.

Renowned as the biggest music night in Ghana, the Ghana Music Awards holds significant importance in the industry. Its iconic trophy, redesigned in 2019, features a Gold Star plaque resembling a guitar, symbolizing the artistry and excellence celebrated by the awards.

At the heart of the ceremony lies the coveted Artist of the Year award, regarded as the pinnacle of recognition. Determined by CharterHouse, the VGMA Board, and the general public, this accolade is bestowed upon the artist(s) with the highest audience appeal, radio play, online streaming, and overall popularity. Eligible artists must have released a hit single or album during the qualifying year, exemplifying excellence and impact in their craft.

As the Ghana Music Awards continues to evolve, it remains a beacon of celebration and recognition within the music industry, honoring the diverse talents and contributions of Ghanaian musicians while inspiring future generations of artists to strive for excellence.
