The GUBA Awards, originally known as the Ghana UK-Based Achievement Awards, have evolved into a prestigious annual event celebrating the outstanding contributions of Africans in the diaspora and on the continent. Organized by GUBA Enterprise, a dedicated social enterprise, these awards recognize and reward excellence, innovation, and impactful initiatives that advance and empower the African community globally.
The GUBA Awards originated from the vision of Dentaa, a Ghanaian TV personality residing in the United Kingdom. Launched in 2009, the inaugural ceremony took place in London in October 2010. The primary goal was to fill a void, acknowledging the substantial contributions of British-Ghanaians to society. Dentaa envisioned a platform that appreciates the hard work and achievements of individuals often overlooked by existing recognition programs.
Distinguishing itself as the first awards ceremony specifically dedicated to acknowledging Ghanaian achievements, the GUBA Awards earned endorsements from both the Ghana High Commission in the UK and the British High Commission in Ghana. The awards stand as a testament to the significant impact and influence of the British-Ghanaian community.
In July 2013, the GUBA Awards achieved further acclaim by receiving the International Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Excellence Award, surpassing over 100 nominees from the UK corporate sector. This recognition highlighted the awards' commitment to promoting social responsibility and positive community impact.
The GUBA Awards structure its categories to reflect the colors of the Ghanaian flag: Red (Business & Enterprise), Gold (Popular Culture), Green (Community), and Black Star (Recognition Awards).
