Aaron Mike Oquaye: From law and politics to Ghana’s Speaker of Parliament

Aaron Mike Oquaye is a Ghanaian lawyer, academic, diplomat, and politician who served as the sixth Speaker of Parliament from 2017 to 2021.

With a background in law and political science, he has held various ministerial roles, including Minister of Energy and Minister of Communications, and also served as Ghana’s High Commissioner to India.

A founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Oquaye played a key role in shaping the party’s success. He was a two-term Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya and later served as the Second Deputy Speaker before becoming Speaker of Parliament.

His political career has been marked by contributions to governance, policy, and legal reforms.

Beyond politics, Oquaye is an academic and author, specializing in governance, human rights, and African politics. He has published extensively and held key academic positions, including Professor of Political Science at the University of Ghana.

He is also a Baptist minister, balancing his legal and political career with religious leadership.
