Renowned Ghanaian gospel musician Yaw Sarpong, founder and leader of the iconic Asomafo gospel group, passed away on January 20, 2026, at Emena Hospital in Kumasi, where he had been receiving treatment for ongoing health issues.

Yaw Sarpong rose to fame in the 1980s after forming Yaw Sarpong & Asomafo in Liberia, blending rich harmonies, disciplined arrangements, and lyrics rooted in Christian teachings. Hits like Wo Haw Ne Hwan, Tie Obiaa, Aduro Yesu, and Awurade Kasa became church staples, shaping modern Ghanaian gospel.

Honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards, Sarpong's influence inspired generations.

His death follows the recent passing of Asomafo's Maame Tiwaa, compounding grief in the gospel community.​
