DopeNation: Ghana’s twin duo blending production, performance and Afrobeats energy

Stories and facts

DopeNation is a Ghanaian music duo made up of identical twin brothers, Michael Boafo, popularly known as B2, and Tony Boafo, known as Twist.

Born in Accra and raised partly in Abeka, the brothers later spent part of their schooling years in Takoradi, where their interest in music continued to grow.

Their journey stands out because they are not only recording artists but also producers and sound engineers, giving them strong control over their sound and creative direction.

Before becoming widely known as performers, DopeNation built a strong reputation behind the scenes. They worked on songs for several major artists, including Shatta Wale, Joey B, Pappy Kojo, Eazzy, Ebony Reigns and Mr Eazi.

Their own catalogue later brought them wider attention, with songs such as “Eish,” “Naami,” “Zanku”, and “Thank God” helping to establish them as one of Ghana’s recognisable Afrobeats and hiplife-influenced duos.

Over the years, DopeNation has become known for lively rhythms, catchy hooks and a willingness to experiment with sound. Their 2023 project, GhanaPiano, showed this clearly by blending highlife, Afrobeats, Afro-fusion, and amapiano, while featuring artistes such as Sarkodie and Medikal.

One of their standout moments is the rise of "Kakalika," a playful and danceable song that has gained popularity beyond Ghana. Its catchy rhythm, clever lyrics, and energy that resonates on social media have allowed it to cross borders, positioning DopeNation within the global Afrobeats conversation.

Reports noted that “Kakalika” entered the Billboard U.S. Afrobeats chart and later climbed higher, with strong performance also linked to UK and global Afrobeats rankings.

This increasing attention shows how DopeNation is promoting Ghanaian creativity on larger platforms while maintaining a bold and enjoyable sound deeply rooted in African music culture.
