Former footballer Charles Taylor opposes Otto Addo's return to Black Stars

Stories and facts

Former Ghanaian footballer, Charles Taylor, has voiced his reservations regarding the potential reappointment of Otto Addo as the head coach of the national team, the Black Stars. Reports suggest that the Ghana Football Association (GFA) is contemplating Addo, currently a talent coach at Borussia Dortmund, as its primary choice for the vacant coaching position.

This development comes on the heels of the dismissal of Chris Hughton, who was removed from his role following the Black Stars' lackluster performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament. To fill the coaching void, the GFA has established a five-member committee entrusted with the responsibility of recommending suitable candidates to the Executive Council.

Despite receiving over 500 applications, including one from Otto Addo himself, Mark Addo, the leader of the search team, has yet to make a final decision on the new coach.

Charles Taylor, who has previously played for Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko, has cast doubt on Addo's potential reappointment, citing the lack of positive outcomes during Addo's previous tenure as the Black Stars coach.

In an interview with Accra-based Onua FM, Taylor expressed his skepticism, stating, "Nothing good will come from Otto Addo. He has coached the team before, and there is nothing positive you could pinpoint from his first stint."

Taylor further questioned the GFA's consideration of past coaches who have successfully led Ghana to World Cup qualifications. "Does that mean we should consider all past coaches who qualified us for the World Cup?" he queried.

As the deliberations continue within the GFA and the coaching search team, the decision to reappoint Otto Addo or select a new head coach for the Black Stars remains uncertain. The concerns raised by Charles Taylor add an additional layer to the ongoing discourse surrounding the future leadership of the national football team.
