Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed was a prominent Ghanaian politician known for his dynamic career and deep commitment to public service.
He served as Member of Parliament for both Nanton and Tamale Central constituencies and held several key government positions, including Deputy Minister for Information and Media Relations, Deputy Minister for Trade and Industry, and most recently, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation.
A trained teacher with advanced degrees in Development Planning and International Relations, Muhammed's political journey began in 2009 when he was appointed Deputy National Coordinator of the National Youth Employment Program.
He later won a parliamentary seat in Nanton in 2012 and, after a brief electoral loss in 2016, returned to Parliament in 2020 representing Tamale Central, a seat he retained in the 2024 elections.
Passionate and outspoken, he was known for his advocacy on national development and youth empowerment.
His career was cut short on 6 August 2025 when he tragically died in a military helicopter crash en route to an anti-galamsey event in Obuasi.
The accident claimed the lives of eight high-profile officials, marking a somber day in Ghana’s political history.
