Born on September 8, 1970, in Tamale, his journey from a young boy in northern Ghana to one of the country’s most respected political figures is as inspiring as it is impressive.
He represents the Tamale South constituency in Ghana’s Parliament and has made a significant mark both in politics and beyond.
Haruna’s story begins at Kulikuli School, where he started his education. His academic path led him to the University of Ghana, where between 1993 and 1997, he earned a degree in Sociology.

Although his tenure as Minority Leader ended in 2023, his influence in Ghana’s political landscape remains strong. His unopposed victory in the NDC primaries for four consecutive terms is a testament to his enduring popularity and commitment to his constituents.
Outside the halls of Parliament, Haruna’s love for football is well known. A self-described weekend player, he owns Karela United, a Ghana Premier League club, and Steadfast FC, a Division One team that produced Leicester City winger Abdul Fatawu Issahaku.
Haruna’s football ventures are not just about the game; they’re about creating opportunities for young talent to thrive.
The transfer of Issahaku to Sporting CP and then Leicester City, which earned his club €7.9 million, highlights the significant role he plays in nurturing and promoting Ghanaian football.
