Stories and facts
Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, is a Ghanaian politician and the current Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Renowned for his bold personality and controversial statements, Chairman Wontumi has become a prominent figure in Ghanaian politics, particularly in the Ashanti Region.
Born on May 1, 1976, in the Ashanti Region, Chairman Wontumi’s journey reflects a classic rags-to-riches story. Despite coming from a modest background, he has risen to significant political and business prominence.
His ventures span mining, media, and real estate, including ownership of a gold mining company in Obuasi and the Wontumi Media Group, which operates Wontumi Radio and Movement TV.
Wontumi's political journey began as the NPP chairman for the Bosomtwe constituency, eventually leading to his election as the Ashanti Regional Chairman in 2014. His leadership and philanthropic efforts solidified his position within the party, culminating in re-elections in 2018 and 2022.
However, his career faced a significant challenge in 2025. On May 27, Wontumi was arrested by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) following allegations of fraud, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state. The investigation also explored potential links to an international organized crime syndicate.
He was granted bail set at GH₵50 million with two sureties to be justified. Despite initial difficulties in meeting the bail conditions, including a legal challenge that delayed his release, Wontumi was eventually freed on June 2, 2025, after the application to review his bail conditions was withdrawn.
The arrest sparked political tensions, with NPP members and supporters staging protests and boycotting parliamentary sessions, claiming the charges were politically motivated.
EOCO, however, maintained that their actions were based on evidence and part of a broader effort to combat financial crimes.
As investigations continue, Chairman Wontumi remains a figure of interest in Ghana's political and legal landscapes, embodying both the heights of political influence and the complexities of accountability.
