Meet Jean Mensa, the accomplished lawyer who headed Ghana’s Electoral Commission

Jean Adukwei Mensa is a Ghanaian lawyer and the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission of Ghana since July 2018.

Appointed by President Nana Akufo-Addo, she succeeded Charlotte Osei after an 18-year career at the Institute of Economic Affairs, where she served as executive director.

Mensa has contributed to several key national policies, including the Presidential Transition Act and the draft revision of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution.

She played a central role in organizing the 2020 Presidential Election and declared Akufo-Addo as president-elect.

Her tenure has seen both recognition and controversy, including backlash over compiling a new voters' register before the 2020 elections.

Mensa has also represented Ghana in international electoral missions and has received several awards for her leadership. She is married to Dr. Charles Mensa.
