Established on February 28, 1952, it holds the distinction of being the first Catholic boys' secondary school founded by the Roman Catholic Church in the region.

The college was initiated by Dutch missionaries and has since gained a reputation as one of the best performing senior high schools in Ghana.

Named after French missionary Bishop Augustine Herman, who served in the Keta Diocese from 1923 to 1945, the school is under the administration of the archdiocese of Ho.

Its motto, "Sicut Miles Christi" ("As Soldiers of Christ"), reflects its Catholic roots and values. Students of Bishop Herman College are known as BIHECans, while alumni are referred to as BHOBUs.

Bishop Herman College stands out for its academic achievements, particularly in the sciences. The school has been recognized as the best performing school in the Volta Region according to WAEC rankings.

Its dedication to science education was highlighted by its victory in the maiden edition of the National Robotics Competition, followed by wins in two subsequent competitions.

The student population exceeds 3,000, with day students making up less than 2% of enrollment. The college offers robust programs in general arts, business, and science, and it is known for educating Ghana's elite.
