Christian Methodist Senior High School: A legacy of education and community challenges in the Greater Accra Region

Stories and facts

Christian Methodist Senior High School, a co-educational public secondary institution located in New Aplaku within the Ga South Municipality of the Greater Accra Region.

The school made headlines in March 2024 when its students were embroiled in a violent confrontation with students from Ngleshie Amanfro Senior High School. The altercation tragically resulted in the deaths of two students, casting a shadow over both institutions.

The school has a rich history dating back to its establishment in September 1960 by the Late Rev. Gordon Nii Akwei Quaye, who founded the school with support from the U.S.-based Christian Methodist Episcopal Church.

Initially, the school operated as a private institution in rented premises at Asylum Down, near Kwame Nkrumah Circle. However, in September 1965, it was absorbed into the public educational system.

The school relocated to its current site in Weija in September 2009, continuing its mission as a co-educational institution.

Christian Methodist Senior High School has gained recognition over the years, with Yen News listing it as one of the top ten senior high schools in the Greater Accra area in 2021.

However, the school has also faced challenges, including a significant land dispute. In 2015, squatters invaded 110 acres of land belonging to the school. By 2018, only five acres remained available for the school's use.

The school has also been a focal point during political events. During the 2020 Ghanaian elections, a polling station at the school became the site of disturbances between supporters of the rival New Patriotic Party (NPP) and National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The tensions arose over allegations of attempts to influence voters by distributing food, highlighting the school's place not only in education but also in the socio-political landscape of the region.
