The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA Ghana), established under Act 490 in 1994, is the government agency responsible for safeguarding Ghana’s environment.
It aims to promote sustainable development through effective environmental planning, regulation, and public education.
EPA Ghana evolved from the Environmental Protection Council (EPC), which was founded in 1974 after global concerns raised during the 1972 Stockholm Conference.
Over the years, the agency has focused on climate change, environmental education, pollution control, and natural resource management.
Key figures like E.A. Boateng, Christine Debrah, and Daniel Amlalo played crucial roles in expanding the agency’s reach, opening regional offices, and drafting major policies like the National Environmental Action Plan.
EPA Ghana has spearheaded initiatives on air quality, coastal management, desertification, and noise pollution.
It also manages Ghana’s commitments under global environmental agreements like the Montreal Protocol and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.
With programs like the Man and the Biosphere, strategic environmental assessments, and waste segregation, EPA Ghana continues to lead environmental governance in the country.
The agency marked its 40th anniversary in 2014 and remains central to Ghana’s efforts toward a cleaner, sustainable future.
