Ghana Athletics Association: Developing athletic talents since 1944

Stories and facts

The Ghana Athletics Association, originally established in 1944 as the Gold Coast Amateur Athletics Association, is the official body responsible for athletics in Ghana.

It holds the sole mandate from the Ghana Olympic Committee to select and send athletes to the Olympic Games. Based in Accra, the Association oversees disciplines such as track and field, cross-country, road races, and marathons.

Over the years, the Association has modernized its structure and operations. In 2023, it announced a rebranding to "Ghana Athletics" and expanded its membership to include six new regional bodies and three specialized federations.

The current leadership, headed by President Bawah Fuseini and Vice President Charles Osei Asibey, has outlined a strategic plan aimed at developing athletics from the grassroots level and enhancing technical capacity nationwide.

Initiatives include nationwide training for coaches and officials, school sports development programs, and collaboration with the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Ghana Education Service.

Ghana Athletics aims to win the country’s first Olympic or World Championship medal in athletics by 2027.

It has already recorded some success, including strong performances at the 2023 African Games and qualification of the men's relay team for the 2025 World Athletics Championships.

The Association also successfully bid to host the 2026 African Athletics Championships and has been shortlisted for the 2024 World Athletics Member Federation of the Year.

Despite these achievements, the organization continues to face challenges such as funding constraints and infrastructure gaps.

Nonetheless, with its renewed focus on development, governance reforms, and strategic international partnerships, Ghana Athletics is positioning itself as a key player in global track and field competition.
