GSTS began as a purely technical school, initially situated at the former premises of the Accountant General, now the site of Kinbu Secondary Technical School in Accra.
The school was established in response to the growing demand for technical education in the British colonies at the time.
The first head of the school was Mr. T.T. Gilbert, and in 1958, Mr. J.W.L. Mills became the first African headmaster. The institution introduced a sixth form in 1961, enhancing its academic offerings.
In the mid-1970s, GSTS briefly admitted students as part of military training, starting with Intake 15 of the then Military Academy and Training Schools.
These students combined regular academic work with intermittent military training during holidays. Today, former students of GSTS are proudly known as Giants, while current students are referred to as Tescans, continuing a legacy of excellence in science and technology education.
