The Ghana Wildlife Society (GWS), established officially in 1995, stands as the nation’s leading non-profit dedicated to wildlife preservation and environmental stewardship. Emerging from the early “Save the Seashore Birds Project” launched in 1991, GWS serves as Ghana’s recognized partner within BirdLife International’s global conservation network.
The organization’s core mission centers on nurturing a balanced relationship between people and the natural world, emphasizing fairness and sustainability in all its conservation efforts.
GWS focuses its work through four key areas: protecting endangered species, safeguarding critical habitats, empowering local communities, and promoting ecological resilience.
Among its notable projects are the comprehensive mapping of Ghana’s Important Bird Areas, ongoing marine turtle monitoring programs, and pioneering climate-smart agricultural initiatives developed in collaboration with both international donors and grassroots partners.
The Society’s advocacy has also influenced national policy, exemplified by its instrumental role in the ban on grey parrot trade—a significant victory for biodiversity preservation.
Grounded in scientific research and community involvement, GWS fosters partnerships across multiple sectors. Its activities range from public education and citizen science programs, such as monthly birdwatching excursions open to all, to large-scale conservation efforts like the Savannah Integrated Biodiversity Conservation Initiative (SIBCI), which aims to connect wildlife corridors near Mole National Park.
With operational bases in Accra and Damongo, the Ghana Wildlife Society remains a vital force in safeguarding the country’s natural heritage while empowering people to become active stewards of their environment.
