Konongo Odumase Senior High School: The story of a school's transformation and growth in Konongo

Stories and facts

Konongo Odumase Senior High School, situated in Konongo-Odumase within the Asante Akim Central District of the Ashanti Region of Ghana, is a notable coeducational second-cycle institution.

Originally established as Konongo Odumasi Secondary School, the institution underwent a name change around 2005, aligning with a nationwide shift during the Kufuor administration to rename all Senior Secondary Schools as Senior High Schools.

The school's origins trace back to the 1950s, part of the "Accelerated Development Plan for Education" initiated after the Convention People's Party's victory in the 1951 Gold Coast legislative election.

The initial student body comprised twenty-one boys and five girls, with influential early educators including D. A. Agyei and B. Spio-Garbrah.

The school relocated to its current site in 1963, moving from the original location, which was colloquially referred to as Biafra about the secessionist state from the Nigerian Civil War.

In the 1965/1966 academic year, the school expanded its curriculum to include a Sixth Form, offering Advanced Level courses. The school crest, crafted by B. Spio-Garbrah, who was not only the first headmaster but also an artist, symbolizes the institution's heritage. The first head boy was S. K. Obeng.

In November 2016, the school experienced unrest when students staged riots demanding the removal of the headmistress. This unrest led to a temporary closure of the institution.
