Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources: Forging essential infrastructure for public prosperity

Stories and facts

The Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources was established to oversee three essential areas of Ghana’s development: infrastructure, housing, and access to clean water.

Based in Accra but serving the entire country, the Ministry is responsible for formulating and implementing policies concerning road construction, drainage management, affordable housing, and potable water supply.

It co-ordinates with key regulatory bodies and advises government on practical approaches to maintaining and extending public services amid swiftly evolving urban and rural landscapes.

Leading the Ministry since early 2025, Hon. Kenneth Gilbert Adjei guides a team focused on widening access to safe water and tackling the nation’s housing deficit.

Bringing experience from his previous post as Deputy Defence Minister, Adjei emphasises collaboration with the private sector to finance housing developments, alongside advancing efforts in flood control and coastal protection.

In February 2025, his visit to Ghana Water Limited underlined the government’s determination to achieve universal water coverage and enhance infrastructure in urban areas.

The Ministry benefits from the expertise of specialised agencies including the Public Works Department, Ghana Water Company, Rent Control Department, State Housing Company, and Architectural & Engineering Services Limited.

Their joint endeavours ensure that housing and water projects adhere to standards of quality, durability, and affordability.

Through targeted housing programmes in underserved regions and infrastructure development along the coast, the Ministry plays a crucial role in improving living standards throughout Ghana.
