National Communications Authority (NCA): Driving innovation in Ghana’s digital space

Stories and facts

The National Communications Authority (NCA) was established by an Act of Parliament, Act 524, in December 1996.

This Act was later repealed and replaced by the National Communications Authority Act, 2008 (Act 769).

The Authority serves as the statutory body responsible for licensing and regulating electronic communications activities and services throughout Ghana.

The mission of the NCA is to progress from being a good regulator to becoming a great one by being an innovative, agile, professional, and proactive organization that effectively responds to emerging changes in the communications and digital ecosystem while delivering excellent service to all stakeholders.

Its vision is to be a world-class communications regulator that enables innovative, reliable, and sustainable communication solutions that meet the expectations of stakeholders.

The NCA oversees a wide range of services designed to promote fair competition, safeguard consumer interests, and encourage innovation within the industry.

These services include the regulation of telecommunication services, broadcasting services, and infrastructure-related services.

Currently, the Authority is led by Rev. Ing. Edmund Yirenkyi Fianko as the Acting Director General. Mr. Salifu Suleman serves as the Acting Deputy Director General for Technical Operations, while Mrs. Etta Mosore holds the position of Acting Deputy Director General for Managerial Operations.

The NCA has undertaken several initiatives to enhance communication services in Ghana.

One of these is the commencement of a Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) trial in Accra and Kumasi, making Ghana the first country in West Africa and the fourth in Africa to introduce this innovation.

The Authority has also launched a short code system that allows users to check how many SIM cards are linked to their Ghana Card, improving transparency and user control in mobile registration processes.

The NCA aims to become a great regulator by being innovative, agile, and proactive in adapting to changes in the digital ecosystem, while consistently serving stakeholders with excellence.
