The National Dance Company of Ghana, initially known as the Ghana Dance Ensemble, was established in October 1962 through a collaboration between the newly independent government and the Institute of African Studies at the University of Ghana.
Under the guidance of Professor J.H. Nketia and Rex Nettleford, the National Dance Company of Ghana was set up with the purpose of presenting traditional Ghanaian dance on a national stage.
Based at the National Theatre in Accra, the company swiftly became a living repository of the country’s diverse rhythms, steps, and storytelling customs.
Through meticulous choreography and authentic costume design, the troupe has revived dances from every region of Ghana, breathing fresh life into customs that were once mainly confined to festivals or family ceremonies.
Rather than tailoring performances for tourists, the company’s programme is firmly rooted in cultural authenticity and artistic discipline. From the powerful war dances of the north to the elegant footwork found in Ga and Akan ceremonial practices, every piece is underpinned by thorough research and field studies.
Accompanied by musicians skilled in traditional instruments such as the atenteben, fontomfrom, and kpanlogo drums, the dancers create a richly textured blend of movement and sound. This careful attention has not only preserved vulnerable traditions but has also introduced them to audiences both home and overseas.
Outside the theatre, the National Dance Company plays a vital role in education and cultural exchange. It runs outreach activities for schools and partners with international ensembles, promoting Ghanaian dance heritage worldwide.
Many Ghanaian dancers have trained with the company and now teach or lead performances internationally.
Through steadfast dedication to authenticity and discipline, the company remains a living link between past and present ensuring Ghana’s dance traditions endure and adapt without losing their foundation.
