National Democratic Congress (NDC)

Stories and facts

Founding of the National Democratic Congress (NDC)

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) stands as a prominent social democratic political party in Ghana, with its roots traced back to the leadership of Jerry Rawlings. Rawlings served as the Head of State of Ghana from 1981 to 1993 and later as the President from 1993 to 2001. The party's formation was in response to international pressure for the restoration of democracy after the establishment of the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) following a military coup d'état on December 31, 1981. The NDC emerged as the ruling party, paving the way for elections in 1992, where Rawlings was elected president. His subsequent re-election in 1996 marked the continuation of the NDC's influence until the end of Rawlings' second term in 2001.
