State Housing Company Limited (SHC): Ghana’s state builder since 1956

Stories and facts

State Housing Company Limited, widely known as SHC, is one of Ghana’s longest-standing housing institutions. It was first established in 1956 as the Gold Coast Housing Corporation under the Gold Coast Housing Corporation Ordinance of 1955.

In 1965, it became the State Housing Corporation, with a mandate to increase the availability of dwelling houses in Ghana.

Its early role reflected a national belief that housing was not only a private need, but also an important part of public service and development.

Over the years, SHC has evolved with Ghana’s changing housing needs. In July 1995, it was converted into a limited liability company and structured to operate as a commercial enterprise while continuing to serve government agencies, local authorities, developers, institutions, and private home buyers.

This shift allowed the company to move from a purely state-supported housing model into a more market-facing role in housing development and estate management.

Today, SHC remains part of Ghana’s wider effort to provide decent and planned housing in a country still facing a housing deficit of more than 1.8 million units.

Its legacy lies not only in the estates and homes it has helped build, but also in its continued place in Ghana’s national housing story.

From the Gold Coast era to modern Ghana, State Housing Company Limited stands as a reminder that housing is central to family life, urban growth, and national development.
