The Ghana Academy of Film and Television Arts: Nurturing excellence in Ghana’s screen industries

Stories and facts

The Ghana Academy of Film and Television Arts (GAFTA), founded in 2001, is a private, professional organization committed to fostering excellence in the art, craft, and science of the motion picture industry, encompassing film, television, and new media.

The Academy comprises the following guilds and associations: Directors Guild of Ghana (DGG), Cinematographers Guild of Ghana (CGG), Art Directors' and Designers' Guild of Ghana (ADGG), Animator's Association of Ghana (AAG), Screen Writers Guild of Ghana (SWGG), Film and Television Production Facilitators Guild of Ghana (FTPFGG), Producers Guild of Ghana (PGG), Motion Picture Sound Guild of Ghana (MPSGG) and Screen Editors Guild of Ghana (SEGG).

With around 250 members, GAFTA promotes high standards in the art, craft, and science of filmmaking and television by providing training, professional support, and a strong ethical framework aligned with its mission to advance excellence throughout Ghana’s motion picture industry.

GAFTA actively participates in advocacy and industry development, working closely with government agencies and international partners to influence policy and regulations. The organization played a key role in the passage and implementation of the 2016 Film Act (Act 935), contributing to the drafting of the legislative instrument through stakeholder retreats and consultations.

As a guardian of cultural heritage, GAFTA established awards and fellowship programs such as the “Legend Series” to honor veteran industry figures like cinematographer Robert “Bob J” Johnson, highlighting its dedication to preserving and celebrating Ghana’s film and television legacy.

On the regulatory side, GAFTA pushes for stronger intellectual property enforcement, urging authorities like the National Communications Authority to factor in copyright violations when renewing licenses, aiming to safeguard local content creators.

The academy also fosters national unity within the industry by promoting inclusive brand identities advising against unilateral naming like “Gollywood” and encouraging ongoing dialogue among guilds, regulators, and government stakeholders. Through its unified voice, professional development initiatives, and cultural stewardship, GAFTA continues to contribute to a more equitable, vibrant, and globally connected Ghanaian film and television sector.
