The Ghana AIDS Commission (GAC) is the highest body responsible for shaping the country’s policy and response to HIV and AIDS. Established in 2002, it brings together a wide range of government ministries, organisations, and community groups to work as one team against the epidemic.
At the heart of the Commission’s work is the aim to coordinate national efforts to prevent new infections, support those living with HIV, and reduce the impact of the virus on families and communities. It provides strong leadership and direction to programmes across Ghana to ensure these efforts are well-organised and effective.
The Commission is chaired by the President of Ghana, highlighting the country's strong commitment to addressing this health challenge. Its members include key ministers, members of Parliament, and representatives from civil society, health services, religious organizations, employers, and labour groups. This diverse representation helps unite various perspectives and resources.
Among its main tasks, the Ghana AIDS Commission develops national policies and strategies, sets priorities for action, and advocates at the highest levels for resources and support. It also oversees the management of funds dedicated to the HIV and AIDS response, making sure they are used where they are needed most.
The Commission works closely with partners in all 16 regions of Ghana through technical support units and regional committees. These partnerships help ensure that programs reach all parts of the country, especially vulnerable and affected populations.
Importantly, the Ghana AIDS Commission encourages research and the exchange of information about HIV and AIDS. It backs efforts to combat stigma and discrimination against people living with the virus, helping to safeguard their rights and dignity.
Throughout the years, the Commission has supported Ghana in overcoming various challenges. Its efforts have made significant strides in reducing new infections and enhancing access to treatment.
The Ghana AIDS Commission’s motto, “Working actively and in partnership to combat HIV and AIDS,” reflects its collaborative spirit. By uniting government, communities, and partners, it continues to lead the country’s fight toward a future free from HIV and AIDS.
