The National Disaster Management Organisation’s commitment to Ghana’s safety and stability

Stories and facts

The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) was founded in 1996 through an act of Parliament to oversee the prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery efforts tied to disasters across Ghana.

Operating under the Ministry of the Interior, NADMO shoulders the responsibility of coordinating the efforts of government agencies, non-governmental groups, and local communities to ensure the nation is ready to face emergencies such as floods, fires, droughts, and other crises.

Its establishment marked a significant step towards a more organised and systematic approach to managing disasters, enhancing the country’s resilience to both natural and man-made hazards.

NADMO’s core functions revolve around developing comprehensive disaster plans and constantly updating them to meet emerging risks. The organisation emphasises public awareness campaigns, technical training, and early warning systems to prepare vulnerable communities for potential disasters.

When calamities strike, NADMO coordinates relief distribution, rehabilitation, and reconstruction initiatives. Beyond emergency response, NADMO also seeks to foster social mobilisation efforts that create employment and reduce poverty, particularly in high-risk areas.

Its goal is to build disaster-resilient communities through capacity building at national, regional, district, and zonal levels, ensuring its presence spans the breadth of the country.

The organisation’s vision is to establish a disaster-resilient Ghana, driven by a professional and coordinated disaster management framework.

NADMO continuously works to enhance institutional capacities and strengthen networks among stakeholders, including government departments, private sector actors, and volunteer groups. While challenges such as limited resources persist, NADMO remains pivotal in shaping national strategies that protect lives and livelihoods.

Through persistent efforts in prevention, preparedness, and response, the National Disaster Management Organisation plays a vital role in securing Ghana’s welfare against the unpredictable forces of nature and human-induced emergencies.
