Stories and facts
The Screenwriters Guild of Ghana (SWGG) is a labor union representing writers of film, television, and other literary works in Ghana. As part of the Ghana Academy of Film & Television Arts, it collaborates with guilds such as directors, producers, cinematographers, and animators to advocate for high standards in storytelling and filmmaking.
The SWGG promotes professional ethics, supports script development, and ensures writers have a voice in policy discussions shaping the nation's film ecosystem.
In May 2025, the SWGG formed a strategic alliance with the Producers Guild of Ghana and the National Film Authority to enhance production quality and create more opportunities for local writers.
This partnership includes backing the Pitch Ahoy programme, which nurtures emerging talent through script showcases and industry engagement.
SWGG leaders also urged the National Film Authority for stronger copyright protection, fair compensation for Ghanaian crew on international productions, and improved incentives to better integrate writers into the filmmaking value chain.
Looking ahead, SWGG is preparing to take a leading role at the National Film Dialogue scheduled for July 30, 2025, to address key industry challenges such as insurance, equipment logistics, and cross-sector collaboration.
With its strengthened partnerships, SWGG is well-positioned to drive the growth of a thriving, globally competitive Ghanaian film industry where well-crafted stories are recognized as the foundation of cinematic success.
