The University of Education, Winneba (UEW), located in the Central Region of Ghana, stands as a premier institution dedicated to the training of educators for the country's education system.
Established in 1992 through a government ordinance (PNDC Law 322), the university has maintained a strong affiliation with the University of Cape Coast, further solidifying its mission of excellence in teacher education.
Mission and Vision
UEW is entrusted with a pivotal role in shaping Ghana’s education landscape by producing professional educators capable of driving a new national vision for economic and social transformation.
Its mandate extends beyond traditional teacher training, aiming to develop scholars equipped with knowledge and skills attuned to contemporary Ghanaian realities and global challenges.
Structure and Organization
The University of Education, Winneba (UEW) operates as a multi-campus institution with its administrative headquarters situated on the Winneba Campus.
This campus is spread across three distinct locations: North, Central, and South, all within the Effutu Municipality.
In addition to its primary base, the university extends its reach through the College of Languages Education located at Ajumako and a network of 18 distance education regional study centers strategically placed across Ghana.
The academic structure of UEW includes a variety of faculties and departments offering a broad spectrum of programs. Among them is the Faculty of Social Sciences Education, which features departments such as Social Studies Education, Business Administration, and Health Education.
The School of Creative Arts provides vibrant programs through its departments of Art Education, Graphic Design, Music, and Theatre Arts.
The Faculty of Languages Education, housed primarily at the Ajumako Campus, includes specialized departments for Akan-Nzema, Ewe, and Ga-Dangme Education, among others.
Meanwhile, the Faculty of Science Education focuses on disciplines like Mathematics, Biology, and Health, Physical Education, and Recreation.
The Faculty of Educational Studies is also pivotal, offering centers dedicated to Continuing Education, Teacher Development, and Educational Policy Studies.
The Ajumako Campus is undergoing a gradual transformation to become the College of Languages Education. This shift underscores UEW's dedication to preserving and promoting Ghanaian linguistic and cultural heritage.
Memorandum of Understanding
In May 2021, UEW further cemented its role as a leader in education by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Transforming Teaching, Education, and Learning (T-TEL), an NGO dedicated to improving educational outcomes.
Funded by the MasterCard Foundation, the MoU aims to enhance the quality of education in Ghana. The signing ceremony took place at the Council Chamber of the university’s North Campus.
