University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR): Shaping the future of energy and resource management in Sunyani

Stories and facts

The University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR), a public-funded university in Ghana, was officially established on December 31, 2011, through an Act of Parliament (Act 830, 2011).

The university aims to provide leadership and expertise in energy and natural resource management while positioning itself as a center of excellence in these critical areas.

UENR adopts an interdisciplinary approach to its programs and research, integrating aspects of economics, law, policy, management, science, technology, engineering, and the social and political dimensions of energy and natural resources.

Origins and Development

The establishment of UENR can be traced back to January 8, 2010, when the late President John Evans Atta Mills formed a National Task Force Planning Committee.

The 24-member committee, chaired by Samuel Kofi Sefah-Dedeh, a former Dean of the Faculty of Engineering Services at the University of Ghana, was tasked with planning and overseeing the implementation of two new universities in the Volta and Brong Ahafo (now Bono) regions. Christine Amoako-Nuamah of the Office of the President served as the committee’s convener.

Following the committee’s recommendations, President Mills performed the groundbreaking ceremony for UENR in Sunyani on February 8, 2011. On June 7, 2012, the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) transferred its Faculty of Forest Resources Technology campus to UENR during a ceremony in Sunyani.

Academic Structure

Once fully operational, UENR will comprise seven schools:

  • School of Engineering

  • School of Energy

  • School of Sciences

  • School of Geosciences

  • School of Agriculture and Technology

  • School of Natural Resources

  • School of Graduate Studies

  • School of Management Sciences and Law

  • School of Mines and Built Environment

Multi-Campus Setup

UENR operates across three campuses in Sunyani, Nsoatre, and Dormaa Ahenkro. The Sunyani campus, spanning 85 acres, hosts the School of Sciences, School of Natural Resources, School of Graduate Studies, the main administration, and the university library.

The Nsoatre campus, covering approximately 2,000 acres, is designated for the School of Engineering. Meanwhile, the Dormaa Ahenkro campus, also on 2,000 acres, will house the School of Agriculture and Technology and the School of Geosciences.

Additionally, the university has four field training stations located in Mim, Bronsankoro, and Kyeraa for Agriculture and Forest Resources Management students, and one in Bui for Engineering students.

Vision for Excellence

UENR aspires to become a leading center of excellence in the training of scientists and technologists for Ghana and beyond. With its focus on energy and natural resources, the university is poised to address pressing global challenges while contributing to national and international development.
