Stories and facts

The Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) is the official body regulating professional boxing in Ghana. Established in the early 2010s, it oversees licensing, event sanctioning, and the development of the sport.

Lawyer Peter Zwennes served as its first president, and under his leadership, the GBA formed various committees to manage its operations. In 2017, the Authority secured office space at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra.

Abraham Kotei Neequaye took over as president in 2021, introducing national title belts, a new website, and branded vehicles to promote the sport.

He also oversaw a major partnership with iMax Media Group to launch the Ghana Professional Boxing League, a televised platform to give local boxers regular exposure.

Despite progress, the GBA has faced challenges, including disciplinary issues and leadership tensions. In June 2025, Neequaye resigned, citing personal reasons and governance concerns.

An election committee was later formed to oversee the selection of new executives. The GBA remains central to Ghana’s professional boxing ambitions and efforts to develop future world champions.
