William Anaam Atuguba is a retired justice of the Supreme Court of Ghana.

Atuguba began his career in the judiciary on October 3, 1974, when he was enrolled as a magistrate. Over the years, he worked in various capacities, including as a private lawyer, prosecutor, and state attorney.

His dedication to the legal profession eventually led to his appointment to the Supreme Court by President Jerry John Rawlings in 1995.

In the course of his service, Atuguba held key leadership roles in the judiciary. On May 25, 2016, he assumed the role of acting Chief Justice while Justice Georgina Theodora Wood was away on official duties.

He also stepped in as acting Chief Justice again on February 21, 2017, prior to the retirement of Justice Wood on June 8, 2017.

He continued in this position until June 19, 2017, when Justice Sophia Akuffo was sworn in by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as the new Chief Justice.

Atuguba’s time on the bench is remarkable not only for his leadership but also for his longevity. He served as a judge for an impressive 44 years, with nearly 23 of those years spent as a justice of the Supreme Court of Ghana.

His contribution to the country’s judicial system has made him one of the longest-serving and most respected figures in Ghana’s legal history.
