Andrew Kofi Egyapa Mercer: Transformational politician from Sekondi

Stories and facts

Born in Sekondi in the Western Region of Ghana, Andrew Egyapa Mercer comes from a family with a strong legal background, as his father, James Mercer, is a Ghanaian lawyer and diplomat.

His educational journey began at the Chapel Hill Preparatory School in Takoradi, where he received his primary education. He continued his studies at the prestigious Adisadel College in Cape Coast, where he earned both his GCE Ordinary level and GCE Advanced level certificates.

Egyapa Mercer's thirst for knowledge led him to the University of Ghana, where he graduated with honours, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in Humanities and a Bachelor of Laws. Subsequently, he pursued legal studies at the Ghana School of Law and successfully passed the bar examination, becoming a qualified lawyer in Ghana.

Egyapa Mercer embarked on his professional journey in 2004 when he started as a pupil with Messrs. Acquah-Sampon and Associates, a reputable firm of solicitors based in Accra. His legal career continued to evolve, and in 2007, he joined First Atlantic Bank in Accra as an assistant manager. With dedication and hard work, he rose through the ranks to become the head of the bank's legal department.

During his tenure at First Atlantic Bank, Egyapa Mercer made his first foray into politics by participating in the 2011 Parliamentary primaries of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Sekondi. Unfortunately, he was defeated by the incumbent Papa Owusu-Ankomah. Undeterred, he decided to pursue his political aspirations further.

In 2013, Egyapa Mercer took a bold step in his career by resigning from his position at First Atlantic Bank to establish Messrs. Mercer and Company, a corporate and investment law firm based in Accra. This move allowed him to combine his legal expertise with his passion for public service.

Egyapa Mercer's political journey officially commenced in 2011 when he contested the NPP parliamentary primary for the Sekondi Constituency. In a competitive race against two other aspirants, including the incumbent MP Owusu Ankomah and Kweku Sam Amoah, he narrowly lost the primary to Owusu-Ankomah.

Determined to serve his constituency, Egyapa Mercer decided to contest the 2016 parliamentary election once more under the NPP banner. His decision was bolstered by the fact that the then-incumbent Member of Parliament, Owusu-Ankomah, had chosen not to seek re-election after serving five consecutive terms.

In May 2015, Egyapa Mercer filed his candidacy forms for the primary elections and ran unopposed in the 2015 primaries, solidifying his position as the NPP candidate for Sekondi.

The campaign trail leading up to the December 2016 elections was marked by enthusiasm and support for Egyapa Mercer. His campaign launch on August 14, 2016, in Sekondi was attended by various speakers, including prominent figures like Alan John Kyerematen, who endorsed him for parliamentarian, and Nana Akuffo-Addo for president.

To further engage with constituents, a constituency debate was organized at the Sekondi Methodist Park to introduce the candidates from different political parties. This event provided an opportunity for voters to understand the perspectives and plans of the candidates.

In the parliamentary election, Egyapa Mercer emerged victorious by defeating candidates from other parties. He secured an impressive 59.47% of the total valid votes with 16,839 votes, representing the majority's choice.

As the MP for Sekondi Constituency, Egyapa Mercer remained actively engaged with his constituents and fulfilled promises made during his campaign. One notable initiative was the donation of five desktop computers and accessories worth US$4,000 to the Sekondi Library, aimed at enhancing teaching and learning within the constituency.

He also played a crucial role in helping Sekondi Eleven Wise, a Division 1 league club based in the constituency, by contributing GH₵5,000 to clear their debt owed to the Ghana Football Association. This support allowed the club to continue its operations, demonstrating Egyapa Mercer's commitment to community development and sports.

Andrew Kofi Egyapa Mercer's journey from law to politics exemplifies his dedication to serving the people of Sekondi Constituency. His legal expertise, combined with his passion for public service, has allowed him to make a significant impact as the incumbent Member of Parliament, fulfilling promises and actively engaging with constituents to bring about positive change.
