In a fiercely competitive race, Newman emerged victorious, defeating the incumbent Member of Parliament, Arthur Ahmed, and Nana Fredua. Newman garnered 440 votes, while her opponents received 327 and 27 votes, respectively.
Her victory in the NPP primaries paved the way for the 2020 December parliamentary elections, where she ran for the Okaikwei South Constituency. In a resounding triumph, Newman secured 40,393 votes, representing a commanding 60.82% of the total vote, against her closest rival, Abraham Kotei Neequaye of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who received 26,019 votes, equivalent to 39.18%. Dakoa Newman's landslide win was a testament to her popularity and the faith her constituents had in her ability to serve them.
