Ibrahim Sunday is remembered as one of Ghana’s finest footballers and a true pioneer in African football.

A midfielder who spent most of his career at Asante Kotoko, he captained the club to their first African Cup of Champions Clubs title in 1970 and was crowned African Footballer of the Year in 1971.

In 1975, he made history when he signed for Werder Bremen, becoming the first African to play in the Bundesliga, even if it was only a single appearance.

For Ghana, he shone at the 1968 and 1970 Africa Cup of Nations, scoring crucial goals to take the Black Stars to two finals. He later represented the country at the 1972 Olympic Games.

After retiring, Sunday turned to coaching and guided Kotoko to another African title in 1983 before achieving continental success again with Africa Sports of Ivory Coast in 1992.

His long list of honors as both player and coach cemented his place among Africa’s football greats, and in 2017 he was recognized with the CAF Legends award.
