From Law to Presidency: The story of John Agyekum Kufuor

Stories and facts

John Agyekum Kufuor is widely celebrated as one of Ghana’s most respected leaders, having served as the nation’s tenth president from 2001 to 2009.

His 2000 election victory over John Atta Mills marked a historic milestone, the first peaceful transfer of power from one democratic government to another in Ghana’s history. He later served as Chairperson of the African Union from 2007 to 2008.

A trained lawyer and seasoned politician, Kufuor’s career spans Ghana’s Second, Third, and Fourth Republics.

He was a minister under Prime Minister Kofi Abrefa Busia, a strong opposition figure during the Third Republic, and later became the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

After losing the 1996 election, he bounced back to win decisively in 2000 and secured a second term in 2004.

Born into royal lineage in Kumasi, Kufuor received his education at Prempeh College, Lincoln’s Inn in London, and Oxford University.

Beyond politics, he is known for his love of sports and once served as chairman of Kumasi Asante Kotoko.

Popularly called the “Gentle Giant,” Kufuor’s leadership is remembered for economic reforms and democratic stability.
