Hassan Ayariga: Tracing the path from presidency ambitions to founding a party

Stories and facts

Hassan Ayariga is a Ghanaian accountant and politician. He founded the All People’s Congress (APC) and was the presidential candidate for the People’s National Convention (PNC) in the 2012 elections.

After losing the PNC’s 2016 primaries to Edward Mahama, he left the party, citing electoral misconduct, and formed the APC. However, he was disqualified from the 2016 presidential race due to issues with his paperwork.

Ayariga spent his early life in Accra, Bawku, and Nigeria, where he began his education.

Though he attended several institutions, including the London School of Accountancy and Atlantic International University, he has not earned a degree from any accredited institution, despite using the title “Dr.” His educational background has been criticized for involving unaccredited institutions.

Coming from a politically active family, his father was a former MP, and his brother, Mahama Ayariga, is a Harvard-educated lawyer and current MP for Bawku Central.

Hassan Ayariga has lived and worked in Germany, maintains business interests in Ghana and abroad, and is married with five children.
