Akatekyi Crocodile Pond: A Place...
September 29, 2025
Akatekyi crocodile pond is located about 30 kilometres west of Takoradi, the capital of Ghana’s Western Region. The pond is home to many West African crocodiles that live freely and peacefully alongside the local community.
What makes this place truly special is the deep respect the people have for these reptiles. They do not see them as dangerous but as sacred creatures tied to their history and beliefs.
According to local tradition, the crocodiles are guardians of the community and carry the spirits of ancestors. They are protected and revered, with locals insisting that no harm comes to them.
Visitors often watch as a fetish priest calls the crocodiles from the water using chants and spells. The crocodiles respond and glide out majestically, drawn by the priest's summons.
At times, the priest offers live fowls as sacred gifts, which the crocodiles accept calmly. This ritual shows the strong bond of trust and respect between the people and these ancient creatures.
The pond is open to visitors every day except Wednesdays, which are kept sacred with no public access. Guests are welcome to bring a bottle of schnapps to join in libation prayers, honouring the crocodiles and their place in local culture.
Surrounded by lush plants and calm waters, Akatekyi Crocodile Pond offers more than just a wildlife spectacle. It reveals a way of life built on respect for nature and tradition, nurtured over generations.
For travellers in the Western Region, it is a remarkable stop among other attractions like pristine beaches and historic forts.
Akatekyi stands as a powerful symbol of harmony, reminding all who visit of the deep connection between people, nature, and community spirit.
