In Ewe oral tradition, Amedzofe which means 'origin/home of humanity', is one of the designations for Ketu. Ketu, located in present-day Benin, held significant historical importance for the Gbe people. Originally belonging to the Yoruba Oyo people of Nigeria, the Gbe people were gradually pushed westward due to conflicts between the 10th and 13th centuries. Upon reaching Ketu, the ancestors of the Gbe-speaking peoples chose to distinguish themselves from other refugees and embarked on establishing their own distinct identity.
Amedzofe played a role in the 19th-century Anglo-Ashanti Wars. In 1880, German missionaries constructed the Amedzofe Training School, while the oldest EP Church in the Avatime Traditional Area was built in Amedzofe by the Germans and has been an integral part of this community since 1889.
