Bia National Park is a remarkable ecological treasure located in the Western North Region of Ghana. Covering 563 square kilometers, it is part of a twin conservation area that includes the Bia Resource Reserve.
First established in 1935 and named after the Bia River, the area was officially declared a national park in 1974 and later recognized as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1985.
The park features pristine forests, some of the tallest trees in West Africa, and an incredible variety of wildlife.
It is home to forest elephants, the rare bongo antelope, over sixty species of mammals, and nearly one hundred and ninety bird species, including several endangered ones.
It also shelters the world’s only known population of the lizard species Agama africana.
Bia National Park is accessible from towns such as Kumasi and Sunyani.
Visitors can enjoy scenic walking trails, ecological tours, and a visit to the sacred Apaso site, where local traditions are honored with offerings to the gods.
It is a perfect destination for nature lovers, adventurers, and those interested in cultural heritage.
