Tema Metropolitan - Tema

Stories and facts

It shares its boundaries with several neighboring districts: Kpone Katamanso and Ningo-Prampram to the North-East, Ledzokuku Krowor Municipal to the South-West, and Adentan Municipal and Ga East Municipal to the North-West. To the South lies the Gulf of Guinea.

Within the Tema Metropolis, there is an in-lock enclave known as Ashaiman Municipal. Covering an extensive area of around 396km2, the metropolis is situated within the coastal savannah zone, with its capital being Tema.

As of the 2010 Population and Housing Census, the total population of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly was 292,773, comprising 47.8% males (139,958) and 52.2% females (152,815). The metropolis has no rural settlements. Projections for 2014 estimated a population of approximately 324,429 persons. Analyzing the population distribution within the Tema Metropolitan area, the age group 25-29 recorded the highest number of inhabitants, constituting 11.4% of the population, while the age groups 90-94 and 95-99 had the lowest population, each accounting for only 0.1% of the total. On average, the metropolitan area had a slightly higher number of females than males, with a male-female ratio of 92:100. This implies that for every 100 females in the Metropolitan area, there were approximately 92 males.

One significant geographical feature of the Tema Metropolis is that it intersects with the Greenwich Meridian (Longitude 0º), meeting the equator (Latitude 0°) in the Ghanaian waters of the Gulf of Guinea. The metropolis's proximity to the sea, coupled with its low-lying terrain that extends into the water, has naturally endowed it with a harbor. This led to the construction of the Tema Harbour in 1957, earning the metropolis the title of "the Eastern Gateway of Ghana."
