Ghana Badminton

Stories and facts

The Ghana Badminton Association (GBA) has long been at the forefront of promoting and developing badminton in Ghana. Since its establishment in 1962, the association has worked tirelessly to grow the sport, bringing it to new heights both locally and internationally.

It plays a vital role in representing the country in badminton competitions and serves as the backbone for organizing events, fostering talent, and coordinating all things related to the sport.

One of the GBA’s key missions is to support the development of badminton from the ground up.

While they focus on grassroots programs to nurture young talent, the association is equally committed to helping Ghanaian players compete on the world stage, including at the Olympics, Commonwealth Games, and Paralympic Games.

Whether it's a local tournament or an international competition, the GBA ensures players are prepared and equipped to succeed.

The association has worked closely with corporate sponsors to organize events that not only promote the sport locally but also aim to develop professional players, technical officials, and coaches who can make an impact internationally.

As a founding member of the Badminton Confederation of Africa and an affiliate member of the Badminton World Federation (BWF), the GBA's influence extends beyond Ghana, cementing its position in the global badminton community.

Beyond the competitive side of things, the GBA is deeply committed to growing badminton through education and community involvement. They run programs at various levels, from primary schools to tertiary institutions, ensuring that students have the chance to get involved with the sport.

The GBA also focuses on social badminton, offering opportunities for veterans to enjoy the game through community and regional clubs. At the same time, the association supports coaching development to ensure that players receive top-notch guidance throughout their journey.

Over the years, the Ghana Badminton Association has been led by seven dedicated presidents who have helped steer the sport’s growth in the country. Their leadership has been instrumental in bringing badminton to where it is today:

  1. Lt. Col Kumi

  2. Mr. Akainyah, Esq

  3. Mr. F.M. Dickson

  4. Mr. Charles K. Darko

  5. Mr. Paul Kodjokuma

  6. Mr. Nestor Percy Galley

  7. Yeboah Evans

Thanks to the GBA’s commitment to nurturing talent, organizing events, and making the sport accessible to all, badminton in Ghana continues to thrive.

Whether it’s the young aspiring athlete or the seasoned veteran, the association provides opportunities for everyone to be part of the badminton journey.

Looking ahead, the GBA’s focus remains on growing the sport at every level and taking Ghanaian badminton players to the world stage.
