Albert Abongo’s story is marked by quiet determination, lifelong service, and a purposeful sense of growth.
Born on September 15, 1959, in Gowrie, a small town in Ghana’s Upper East Region, he grew up with a strong bond to his community and a deep desire to create positive change.
This drive would take him across continents and lead him through two demanding careers, beginning as an engineer and later evolving into a role in public service.
In the 1980s, Abongo pursued higher education with ambition and focus. He earned a civil engineering degree from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and later traveled to Norway to specialize in Ports and Coastal Engineering at the University of Trondheim.
After completing his civil engineering degree at KNUST and a postgraduate qualification in Norway, he brought his skills to bear at Ghana Ports and Harbors Authority before transitioning to politics.
Since he was elected as MP in 2001, Abongo has leveraged his engineering acumen to influence infrastructure and development policy.
His tenure as Minister for Water Resources, Works and Housing in 2009 saw him push for projects to decongest urban landscapes and strengthen national infrastructure.
Later, as Upper East Regional Minister, he focused on agricultural development, including the construction of dams to support dry-season farming, and promoted youth empowerment through education and economic opportunities.
Albert Abongo chose not to seek re-election in the 2016 Parliamentary elections, bringing his long-standing political career to a close as he transitioned fully into private business ventures.
Today, Abongo works as a businessman, owning and managing several ventures including real estate development and farming.
