Emmanuel Odarkwei Obetsebi-Lamptey was a prominent Ghanaian nationalist, lawyer, and politician who played a critical role in the fight for Ghana’s independence.

Born on April 26, 1902, in Accra, Emmanuel Odarkwei Obetsebi-Lamptey hailed from the Ga ethnic group. He pursued his early education in the Gold Coast (modern-day Ghana) and later studied law in the United Kingdom. Upon his return to the Gold Coast, he became a well-regarded lawyer, using his legal expertise to champion justice and fairness.
Obetsebi-Lamptey was a founding member of the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC), the first political party in Ghana. The UGCC aimed to achieve self-governance and mobilize the people of the Gold Coast against colonial rule. His skills as an orator and strategist made him a key figure in the party.
In 1948, protests erupted in Accra following the killing of ex-servicemen who were demanding better conditions from the colonial government. These events, known as the Accra Riots, were a turning point in Ghana’s independence struggle.
Obetsebi-Lamptey, along with five other UGCC leaders—later referred to as the Big Six—was arrested by British authorities for allegedly inciting the riots. Though they were released without charge, this moment solidified their status as symbols of resistance and courage.
Obetsebi-Lamptey was a staunch advocate for justice, unity, and self-determination. His vision was for a free and independent Gold Coast where citizens could govern themselves. He believed in collective action and inspired many Ghanaians to join the independence movement.
Emmanuel Odarkwei Obetsebi-Lamptey passed away on January 29, 1963, but his legacy lives on. He is remembered as one of Ghana’s most influential independence leaders. His name is immortalized in Ghanaian history, with streets, schools, and public institutions bearing his name as a tribute to his contributions.
His son, Jake Otanka Obetsebi-Lamptey, became a notable Ghanaian politician, continuing the family’s tradition of service to the nation.
